I finally succumbed to the meme. Woe is me.

Comment and I will give you five things I associate you with. Then, expand on your own journal!

care of hedgerose

1. Red glasses
Lessee, I think I've been wearing the same pair (or well, replacement frames that are identical to the originals) the whole time hedgerose has known me. I feel like mine are sort of retro, and they draw a bit of attention to a part of my body I like. I mean, if I have to wear glasses, they might as well be awesome. Also, since being abducted willingly into bandslash, I think I associate them a little with Brendon Urie, which, you know, isn't the worst person in the world to be like.
2. Los Angeles
Where I live, of course, and go to college. Not where I'm settling -- it's too hot by half -- but a nice place to bunk down in for a few years. Totally different vibe from New England; I've said in the past, and still believe it to be true that Boston to LA was a way bigger culture shock than Boston to London (even if I was only there for a week).
3. Fanfic
A wonderful and time consuming addiction of mine. I've yet to complete more than a little songfic quadruple drabble of my own, but I read it by the bucketload. It's definitely one of the things hedgerose and I bonded over. I'm still debating whether to write my senior thesis about the ways in which writing and reading fanfiction (and creating and looking at fanart, etc.) is a subversive yet community defining act.
4. CSI: Vegas
Huh. Well, I do like Vegas, though I like New York more. Mid Vegas is my favorite, before they started killing off or sending away half the main cast. And I still want to write the CSI/Criminal Minds crossover where Warrick and Reid knew each other that arsinyk and I started in art class all those years ago. And the one where Nick meets Sam Seaborn and Daniel Jackson and they all fall in love and he and Sara bond over being kinky and gay. What, it's a whole plot in my head. There are completed interludes in my head. (I like Nick and Sara as sibling type friends.)
5. Renfaire!
I was heavily involved in this last year, thrown into the deep end by working it my first year there. I was a rabble rouser, which means I was a cheerleader for the joust. Chemise, bodice, two skirts, bloomers, long socks, muffin cap, all in 80, 90, 100 degree weather (that's farenheit), though we could take off one skirt when it got above 90. I loved it though, it was great for my stage fright thing. I'm not working it this year -- can't afford to in time and money, but I'm hoping to be able to once more in the future

So as to properly explain the eclectic nature of my music tastes, I present the last several songs that appeared on my Ipod on shuffle (in the order they appeared):

Never Gone (Backstreet Boys)
Defying Gravity (Wicked Original Broadway Cast)
I Will (The Beatles)
You're Crashing, But You're No Wave (Fall Out Boy)
The End (My Chemical Romance)
Quit Playing Games (Backstreet Boys)
Thriller (Fall Out Boy)

Now, I realize there are some reptition of groups, but the thing I'm pointing out is that my ipod went from (rock-)pop to Broadway to classic rock to emopunkpop back to nineties pop and then back to emopunkpop. And now it's playing John Mayer, which is probably rock...Clearly my Ipod doesn't like to stick to a genre. My fault, obviously. *g*

Dec. 14th, 2007 02:31 am Oh, Abigail, Abigail...

...I have such a desire to knock heads together.
Mostly the head of one of my Education professors and some hard stonelike object, actually. Anyways.

Also. I find myself contemplating the difference between playing gay the way Pete Wentz and Gerard Way and Brendon Urie do it and the way my homophobic tutees do it. What is the difference that makes me grit my teeth when the ninth grade boy faux-hits on his classmate, but grin in support and laughter when I hear about Gerard Way and Frank Iero making out on stage? The conclusion I keep coming back to is that even when the actions are the same (which they actually aren't, but...)the intent comes across clearly. My tutee is making fun of gay men, while the boys of bandom are purposely transgressing boundaries of how much contact men are supposed to have.

But I also see how some people could find both offensive, regardless of the intention of the latter. And I totally understand that. I just wonder why I accept it from the pretty emo band boys, and not my tutees.

Of course it also occurs to me that an inner-city high school classroom and the concert stage of a popular band are very different places.

Sep. 12th, 2007 04:37 pm Happy belated bday, Fluffy!

In honor of Fluffy's birthday at the end of last month, I give you six silly haikus about Captain Jack. (Harkness, that is.)

Jack loves the Doctor.
Jack loves the Doctor and Rose.
See how Jack loves them.

Ianto sleeps with Jack.
Jack and Ianto with stopwatch.
Ianto cries with coat.

Jack is giant head.
Wise Jack counsels the Doctor.
“You are not alone.”

Jack helps the Doctor.
See the Doctor, Rose, and Jack.
Flying the Tardis.

Jack and Martha meet.
Ten does not like their flirting.
Flirt with Martha, Jack!

Jack flirts with people.
Jack flirts with lots of people.
Flirt with people, Jack!

Happy (belated) bday, Fluffy!

So I'm settled into my dorm room, and now I'm just relaxing and listening to my boyband playlist on shuffle. Yes, I am that much of a fangirl. The roomie returns tomorrow and classes start Wednesday afternoon (or they should...)

Of course, I have chorus tonight anyway, and I've only managed to get one of the scores, but such is the way of things, I guess. I do have all of my books for academic classes, so that's good.

Happy belated bday, Fluffy, and *crosses fingers* hopefully I'll be getting a prezzie to you soonish. *g*

So sometimes when I run across a cool LJ, I go back to the beginning of the posts that person made, and read through them til i get to the present (and then keep up to date on them like every other open window in my browser). Consequently, I run into memes and quizzes that went around tbe lj universe way earlier, but I missed. So...

Go to Wikipedia and look up your birth day (excluding the year). List three facts, two births and one death in your journal, including the year.

Oct. 7
Facts:
1582 - Due to the implementation of the Gregorian calendar this day does not exist in this year in Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain.
1955 - Beat poet Allen Ginsberg reads his poem "Howl" for the first time at a poetry reading in San Francisco.
2001 - The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan starts with an air assault and covert operations on the ground.

Births:
1885 - Niels Bohr, Danish physicist, Nobel Prize laureate (d.1962)
1931 - Desmond Tutu, South African archbishop and Nobel Laureate

Death:
1849 - Edgar Allan Poe, American writer (b. 1809)

There, meme away. *grins*

Also:

Okay, as a comment on my page, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember! Don't send a message; leave a comment. Next, re-post this bulletin and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually pretty cool (and funny) to see the responses.

I dunno how many of you are watching Studio 60, but...sigh... Sorkin writes such wonderfully slashy male friendships. I keep seeing the phrase 'heterosexual life partners' in reference to the pairs he's written (Dan and Casey, Sam and Josh, Jed and Leo, and now Matt and Danny). So totally works. So I found fic already, and some of it is written by Perpetual Motion, who's written a lot in West Wing. So anyhow, in the comments of the story she said,

'I swear Bradley Whitford could have chemistry with a coffee table. Luckily, Matthew Perry is much hotter than a coffee table.'

Ahem. Snerk. (Oh, BW is Danny, MP is Matt. Sorry.)

I do so love Sorkin.

Hee.

Interestingly enough, I also saw slash elsewhere in the second ep, between Danny and Simon Stiles (played by DL Hughley). They had this whole 'when you left the show you left me/why didn't you come with me?' vibe. I was quite pleased.

(I think part of it was that the scenes of Danny and Simon were sort of juxtaposed with scenes of Matt and his canonical het former/current love interest. Just a thought.)

And I'm finally feeling unsick, after the horror of last week. Thank God. So now I'm just trying to actually pull off this whole college thing. Heh.

Be seeing you-

So I finally got my computer, and my boxes from home. Tis good. Classes started last Wednesday, after Convocation. I'm taking my Core class, which is on Western Art Music (more commonly referred to as classical music), a course on 20th Century Opera, Intro to Women's and Gender Studies, and a history course Europe to 1700. I was also supposed to take a modern dance class, but I'm gonna have to drop it. It conflicts with Occidental Chorale, which I managed to get into. So...

In other news, I think I maybe have a boyfriend...well, we've kissed (read: made out), and the thing is, he's practically perfect. I mean, he's bi, he likes Buffy, and slash, and he plays the bagpipes. He also fights with swords. If he could sing, he'd be perfect. He lives the floor above me in Newcomb.

And Melissa, my roommate, is pretty cool, so all in all, life here at Oxy is swell.

Aug. 27th, 2006 06:14 pm woot

Note that the previous entry should have been posted friday. Alas, computers do not always like me.

So I'm sitting in the computer lab of my dorm, since my laptop has not yet come to me. Woe. Oxy is pretty darn cool. Today was the second day of Orientation. We have two more. The 'rents left for good at about two thirty, and since I got all my crying out of the way Saturday morning, I'm doing okay now. All the dorms have some sort of theme, and mine (Newcomb) is 'Star Wars: A Newcomb Hope'. Amusing. There's a whole paper representation of the battle between the Death Star and the X-Wings on the wall of the common room.

And life goes on.

So we visited Oxy today, cause there were some forms that needed submitting. It's gorgeous, with palm trees and all sorts of other greenery. It's sort of hilly, and I firmly believe that between the heat and the hills, I'm likely to lose a bit of weight. Excellent.

We also visited the town where my mother grew up, Pasadena. We looked at various house she lived in, and schools she attended. We also went to see the store that used to be her father's camera store, many years ago. Now, this may not mean anythin to most of my flist, but...so the store is in front of J. Lo's restaurant. The buildings are literally touching. It's sort of freaky.

And then we visited my mom's Uncle Steve and Aunt Eve, who still live in Pasadena. Their daughter Tonya and her husband Will stopped by. I really like Tonya. I think maybe she'll make this how thing a little less daunting to me.

Anyhow, tomorrow to Oxy. Eeeep.

Aug. 25th, 2006 10:04 am umm, stuff

Hi all-

So I'm in Los Angeles. (Woodland Hills, to be exact, which in fact is the warmest part of LA. Really. It was 106 degrees yesterday.) We're staying with family, and Orientation at Oxy starts tomorrow. Of course, neither my boxes nor my computer will get here for several days (i think), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Luckily, I brought most of my clothing type things with me by plane, so it's not a horrible thing. I'm gonna change my info and stuff, so y'all can actually get in touch with me.

Anyhow, Happy Birthday to Fluffy, and I'll see everyone in December.

Let's see...Last wednesday I got my haircut very short. Then, thursday, I had a doctor's appt for a vaccine and a test. You know, the ones they require before you attend college. Unfortunately, my tendency to get light headed from medicinal needles reared its ugly head...not fun, lemme tell you. Then, on friday my parents and I went to Nantucket for the day. Dad's been tutoring a kid there, and this was the last time, so mum and I went with to see the island. Of course, I'm not too good with boats. The ferry ride put me out of commission for the morning, but once dad finished up with his student, he and mum and I walked around a bit. I got a t-shirt.

Otherwise, that's about it. I've become mildly obsessed with Firefly, cause I ran across the DVDs at the library, and checked them out. I'm leaving for California on the twenty-third, and frankly, I'd really like to see some of my friends before I leave. Um, that's about it.
